Watford Observer: Motorists face long queues through Watford Motorists face long queues through Watford

Commuters in Watford are facing long queues this morning as traffic backs up into the town centre.

There are currently several jams, along Hempstead and Rickmansworth Road.

Emergency repairs to a gas leak mean a four-way traffic light is being used to control the queues.

Hertfordshire police said there were no incidents leading to the queues.

There's always a queue on Rickmansworth Road.

Ever since county installed slow traffic lights at the Hagden Lane junction traffic that used to flow smoothly now spends much time stationary, belting out pollution.

At the time they were discussing lights at the junction several years back I pointed out that there was sufficient space for a mini-roundabout and that with pedestrian lights already just up the road, that was all that was needed to make the junction efficient for all.

As usual though, County went for the most expensive and complex lights solution and it has proved a disaster. I just hope that they come to their senses one day and remove them. Then, just as we saw at Watford Junction when the lights were taken away, traffic will once again start to flow smoothly on this arterial road.

But hey D_Penn we used to have a mini-roundabout at the junction of Queens/St Johns/Orphanage and Woodford roads. The traffic flowed freely in all directions until the installation of traffic lights. Now there's traffic misery and pollution on all approaches to this once free-flowing junction. Who's responsible for this misery? Step forward Watford's Lib Dems who went around all households in the aforementioned roads plus Westland and Canterbury Roads promising voters in this area slow moving traffic and, in the case of Westland and Canterbury Roads no through traffic. All of this was done under the guise of the "Watford Green Zone" or some such tosh in order to strengthen the Lib Dem grip on power of Watford Council.
Before Dotty's little helpers remind me that Highways are the remit of HCC; I'll remind them that the frenetic lobbying by LD councillors resulted in this traffic misery being imposed upon the long suffering motorists along with the added pollution for residents. Anyone doubting that Watford Lib Dems have input on Highways need only to look back to Dotty's triumphant trumpeting of "her" scrapping part of the hated bus lane on Junction Bridge.
As for the junction of Hagden Lane and Ricky Rd, this junction is screaming out for such a common sense touch as a mini-roundabout but don't hold yer breath.
