Care home Scrabble queen Winifred Phillips celebrated her 106th birthday on Tuesday with fellow residents and staff of Croxley House in The Green.

Winifred was born in Willesden, north west London, but she has lived in Croxley Green for more than 80 years.

She married Arthur Phillips at Bushey Congregational Church on June 10, 1933. He was an artist and they moved to Watford Road, Croxley Green, soon after their wedding. There they had two children, a son and a daughter.

Winifred lost her husband when the children were young so to support her family she started work as a secretary at Harvey Road School and remained working there until she retired.

She remained in the family home in Watford Road until she could no longer manage by herself and moved into Croxley House on February 29, 2003.

Winifred has had many happy years there and has been involved with many activities and particularly enjoyed playing, and usually winning, the word game Scrabble.

On her birthday she received many cards and flowers from her family, staff and residents. She also received her treasured card and telegram from the Her Majesty the Queen.

Tracey Jones, deputy manager at Croxley House, said: "She is a very happy and friendly lady who never complains about anything. She is very popular."
