A popular swimming pool used by the public in Kings Langley will be demolished to make way for a redeveloped village school.

The pool, which is in the grounds of Kings Langley Secondary School, has been used by Kings Langley Swimming Club since 1972.

However, it will be filled in by 2016 as part of a plan to rebuild the Love Lane School.

This decision comes after the Department for Education announced that property developer Interserve Kajima would rebuild eight schools, including Kings Langley.

During a parish council meeting on Thursday night, David Peacock, 74, a resident from Barnsway, which backs on to the Love Lane school said: "We can see it being used well into the evening and the night.

"It is a well-used facility in the heart of the community."

However, Frances Stickley, chairman of governors said the school was disappointed but the Education Funding Agency had made the final decision.

She said: "The rebuild we are having done is being controlled by the Education Funding Agency. They are the ones who are making decisions on the land and how it’s used in the future.

"When they came to parcel up the land for use for the future school, the school swimming pool was not going to be considered part of that future build. The school is disappointed, but this was the decision of the EFA."

Ms Stickley added: "We look forward to all the fantastic new sports facilities at a brand new sports hall and other playing surfaces the site will give us and we hope that the community will continue to use our other new sports facilities as they have shared our swimming pool in the past."

The school is hoping to move into the new site by July 2016 but will not be taking on any more students.

Councillor Ron Smith, chairman of Kings Langley Parish Council said: "I would say I’m very sympathetic to the people that do want to use it but can’t necessarily get to Watford or Hemel Hempstead."

Is this part of a programme to accommodate all the immigrant children that will need schooling? Never mind the locals needs or enjoyment.

A nasty comment, from someone not prepared to identify themselves.

If you read the story you will see that the school will not be taking any more pupils. It is being rebuilt because the buildings and facilities are too old and not fit for purpose.

It's not 'political correctness' it's accuracy. Read the article and look around you. And scaremongering is never very nice.

BTW 'Sara' identifies me pretty well. It's my real name, it's an unusual name and I quite often remind people that I am a local councillor in Abbots Langley. A lot of people here know exactly who I am, I am sorry if you don't.

The only reason that I don't give a surname as part of my user name is that it can do strange things with online searches.

Good for you Sara, I am impressed indeed. A real councillor no less! Sara is not unusual to me at all. "In Jewish scripture, Sarah (spelled Sara) is the wife of Abraham, the patriarch of the Jewish people. She is celebrated for her beauty as well as for her audacity". However I have no wish to pursue this discussion with you as it will be too on going, It's the audacity thing that tells me to end this now. So I will say Goodbye or Shalom.

I am not quite sure why you found the need to make such a bizarre comment. There are very few Saras around and I'm not named for Abraham's wife or anyone else in any faith's scriptures.

Getting back to the swimming pool issue, does nobody have any vision/commonsense any more? So many school pool are being closed down. Eg. Westfield School closed theirs in October 2012. Watford Grammar School for Boys has allowed houses to be built on theirs, although you can still see it on Google Maps.
Swimming is such an important but neglected life skill. Where is this dedicated swimming club going to find pool time anywhere else? It will be a huge loss for the school and for the community. The school should have been more assertive, I feel.
