Rickmansworth woman Elsie Alexander celebrated her hundredth birthday surrounded by friends and family.

Elsie, who worked as a telegraphist during the Second World War, said the secret to a long and happy life was to "be content".

The great grandmother-of-two said: "Be content with life. Never give up. Get on with things and be grateful for what you have.

"And keep your brain active by reading and doing crosswords."

The avid Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin fan has also enjoyed dress making, wine making and flower arranging.

Helen Lyne, Meresworth Residential Care Home home administrator, said: "Many congratulations to Elsie Alexander who celebrated her 100th Birthday with family and friends on Friday, May 2.

"Elsie has been a resident at Meresworth Residential Care Home in Rickmansworth since June 2012.  She has many interesting stories to tell.  On opening her birthday card from the Queen, Elsie remarked ‘how marvellous’.

"Elsie is a truly lovely lady, who is a real inspiration to us all."
