Cassiobury Park was turned pink this weekend as more than 3,000 women ran the Race for Life - raising more than £250,000 for Cancer Research UK.

Women of all ages got their trainers on to raise an expected £262,000 on Sunday in one of the most successful charity events held in Watford.

The runners - kids and adults alike - donned t-shirts with the slogan ‘cancer, we’re coming to get you’, while crowds lined the course to cheer on the participants.

Some tackled the 5km run in pink fancy dress, including bunny ears, top hats, flower boas, tutus and fairy wings.

Others brought their pets along for the day, with pooches sporting their own pink t-shirts for the cause.

Organiser Julie Braithwaite said 3,200 took part - with some groups raising as much as £34,000 between them.

She said: "It was brilliant, a really good day. The worst of the rain held off for us.

"There were lots of people in fancy dress this year, lots of little dogs - which is always fun.

"We had one amazing group of women - 150 of them in a single group who raised £34,000.

"It all went very smoothly, we started on time and the course worked well.

"Roughly, we expect to have raised £262,000 from the event though we don't know exactly how much until the final figures come in."

Everyone made it round the 5k course, with only a couple of first aid incidents for the odd minor sprain.

Julie said she was brought to tears by some of the personal stories shared on the day.

She said: "Sisters Mel Baum and Denise Levy started the event with a moving speech on stage, it brought me to tears. I've been organising this event for five years, but someone sharing their personal stories online is very emotional."

Both Mel and Denise are cancer survivors, with Denise fighting both breast cancer and liver cancer.

Julie said the charity was now going full stream ahead for next year's Race for Life, which will be held on father's day 2015.
