Radlett Choral Society celebrates its 60th birthday with a very special concert

Talented young musician Michael Hope will be returning to his hometown of Watford for the Radlett Choral Society’s 60th anniversary concert, which has commissioned him to compose a piece of music for the celebration.

The piece, Jubilate Deo, is an eclectic mix of styles, but with strong Anglican, choral traditions throughout.

“It’s a jubilant, celebratory song very fitting for the occasion“ says composer Michael, 19 who is studying compostion at Manchester University.

“It is a great honour to have been asked to compose the piece. I want to thank Nikki Webb and Alex Flood of the society as without them, I wouldn’t have this opportunity to have my music performed.“

Michael was born in Watford and after his first choral experience with the English National Opera he began to pursue music as a career. After performing in many further operas he joined the St Albans choir at the age of seven and learnt the art of conducting.

Consequently, he was awarded a scholarship to the Purcell School of Music in Bushey.

“Purcell really broadened my horizons and opened my mind to different styles of music, which has definitely influenced my own music,“ says Michael.

The concert marks the launch of the celebrations for the 150th anniversary of Christ Church in Radlett and features the Choeur de Louveciennes, the choir of Radlett’s twin town in France. The concert will culminate in the two choirs performing Vivaldi’s Gloria.

“I am very much looking forward to the performance of Gloria,“ says Michael. “I am familiar with the piece and it ties in nicely with my own.“

The concert takes place at Christ Church, Watling Street, Radlett, on Saturday, June 28, at 7.30pm. Details: radlettchoral.org
