A support group for people with dementia has been set up in Chorleywood.

The group, which is designed to raise awareness of the condition, is being launched at Sunrise Senior Living of Chorleywood, in High View.

Led by Melanie Allen, area manager of business development at Sunrise Senior Living, the group includes representatives from Chorleywood Business Association, Chorleywood Residents’ Association, the Community Police and U3A Rickmansworth Fire Station.

The group was set up following Alzheimer’s Society’s Dementia Friends initiative, which aims to have 1,000,000 Dementia Friends by 2015.

The scheme is designed to help make the country more dementia-friendly and improve the lives of people currently living with the condition.

A meeting will be held on Monday, August 18, at Sunrise Senior Living of Chorleywood at 6.30pm.

Ms Allen said: "The Sunrise team is passionate about the work they do for people who live with Alzheimer’s and dementia and we are thrilled to be able to reach out to the local community in this way.

"We plan to run Dementia Friends sessions in Chorleywood which are about encouraging a better understanding.

"People need to make adjustments to the way they do things. Residents will be encouraged to be more tolerant with people who experience difficulties and to be alert to individuals who may be wandering around and confused."

The group is still looking for people to get involved. For more information contact Ms Allen on 01923 883470.
