The centenary of the declaration of World War One will be commemorated at a number of locations across Three Rivers today.

A candle lighting ceremony was held at Chorleywood War Memorial Hall, in Rickmansworth Road, at 11am.

The event, organised by Chorleywood Parish Council, will mark the declaration of the Great War on August 4, 1914.

Candles were lit by Tony Edwards, parish council chairman, and Rodney Kipps, who is chairman of the Chorleywood branch of the Royal British Legion.

There was be a small exhibition and an opportunity for quiet reflection.

At 2.30pm, Three Rivers’ vice chairman, Eric Bishop, will be attending a book launch at the Memorial Hall featuring author, Sue Woolmans, who wrote The Assassination of the Archduke.
This will be followed by a reading of World War One poetry.

Afternoon tea will be provided by the Royal Voluntary Service. Tickets are available from the Chorleywood Bookshop at £3 each and the event is free to ex-servicemen and women.

Profits will go to the Royal British Legion.

cgpc Rob says...

Well done.

Nothing of note in Croxley Green, before the usual come on, I've long lost the will to attempt to get CGPC to do anything, as its usually met with hostility.

They most probably will put me on the habitual and vexatious list!
