Hundreds of people will be carrying candlelit lanterns in a parade through Bushey to mark the Holocaust Memorial Day.

The parade, which will be led by Hertsmere Mayor, councillor Carey Keates, on Tuesday, January 27, will pay tribute to the millions of people killed during the Second Wold War.

The day marks the anniversary in 1945 when the Soviet Army liberated the largest Nazi concentration camp, Auschwitz Birkenau.

Councillor Keates said: "This parade and ceremony are being held as part of international memorial events, providing an opportunity for people to pause to remember the millions of people, who have been affected by the Holocaust, Nazi persecution and in subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur and now in Syria.

"Holocaust Memorial Day enables us to make a stand against all forms of discrimination, racism and hatred.

"The strongest communities are those that celebrate differences and where there is respect for all. Here in Hertsmere, we're fortunate to have strong, diverse communities where the majority of people are tolerant and respectful of others and their beliefs."

This year the theme is Keep The Memory Alive, to remember the Holocaust, Nazi persecution and subsequent genocides.

Those who have no direct experience to recall are asked, on Holocaust Memorail Day, to remember those who were murdered and to honour the survivors.

The parade will begin at 6pm from Bushey County Club and will go along High Street and London Road, ending at the Bushey Academy, where a ceremony will take place.

This will include a two-minute silence, speeches from the mayor and council leader, as well as stories and musical performances.

While the parade takes place there will be a rolling roadblock along the route.
