Oxhey Jets advanced in the Floodlight Cup

There was a rare bright spot in a disappointing season for Oxhey Jets on Tuesday evening as they advanced into the South Midlands Floodlight Cup semi-finals after defeating Ampthill Town 2-0.

The trip to the Premier Division leaders looked a difficult task for Jets but they went ahead in the 25th minute.

Lee Armitt chased down a long pass forward and put pressure on the covering defender whose back pass looped over Town’s goalkeeper and into the net.

Jets were able to maintain their slender advantage until the interval but a change was needed as the injured Luke Beardsworth was replaced by the prolific Lewis Putman, who himself had only just returned from a long absence.

Jets continued to attack after the break and they were able to double their advantage just after the hour mark as Armitt took advantage of a defensive mistake to slot home.

Oxhey defended well throughout and deserved their clean sheet. At the other end, Putman was brought off as a precaution after injuring his ankle and his replacement, Luke Wells, played Armitt through for his second of the evening.

Only bad luck could deny Jets and, when a third of the floodlights went out with five minutes remaining, the referee had a decision to make.

Fortunately for the visitors, he allowed the match to continue and Oxhey were able to see out the final moments and claim an impressive victory.

On Saturday, Jets were in Premier Division action as they took on Hoddesdon Town.

Two first-half goals proved costly for Oxhey as strikes from Robbie Carroll and Ben Andreos established a Hoddesdon lead.

Armitt pulled a late goal back for Jets but it was nothing more than a consolation for the visiting side.
