Watford are yet to make a final assessment on Almen Abdi’s foot injury but head of medical Marco Cesarini says the club are doing their best to see if the midfielder can return before the end of the season.

The Swiss international has made just ten appearances for the Hornets during the current campaign and has not featured since the end of January.

Cesarini says the club must make sure the final assessment on Abdi’s injury is the right one but insisted the problem was not career threatening.

“It is frustrating for him, the coaches and the supporters,” he said. “It is a situation we have to deal with every day and it is very frustrating.

“We have to accept the situation and at the moment we are assessing him and are doing our best to try to have him back on the pitch this season. If not then we will say something as soon as we have made the decision.”

Abdi will certainly be absent as the Hornets travel to Bolton Wanderers in the Championship on Saturday.

Lewis McGugan’s thigh injury will also keep him out, although he is expected to return to training on Monday.

Fernando Forestieri (hamstring) and Fitz Hall (Achilles) are out injured but Lloyd Doyley returned to training today and could be in contention for a place in the squad.

Hornets head coach Beppe Sannino said Chu-Young Park could come into the Watford side.

When asked he if would make changes to the team which drew at Yeovil Town on Tuesday, Sannino said: “Of course, I am nearly obliged to change my men [because of the busy schedule].”

Bolton have not won in their last nine league matches and sit 18th in the Championship table.

They are six points above the relegation zone but Sannino will not be taking anything for granted at the Reebok Stadium.

“We have to approach the Bolton game with the right mentality because nobody gives you anything. You have to earn it through hard work,” he said.

“My team will not change their mentality. My team always play to earn three points but what can change is the mentality of the other team.

“Some teams are battling against relegation and other teams are challenging for promotion. So in my opinion all of the matches are difficult in this league.”
