A comparative reflection on Watford's strong form at Vicarage Road under Beppe Sannino

Watford’s away form will need to be addressed if they are to embark on a sustained late push for the play-offs but their record at Vicarage Road under Beppe Sannino makes for impressive reading.

Saturday’s 4-0 win over Blackpool was the Hornets’ fifth consecutive home win in all competitions and the first time the club have recorded five straight league and cup victories since midway through the 2010/11 season when Malky Mackay was at the helm.

However, you need to dig deeper into the archives to find the last time a Watford side went five straight games without conceding a goal.

A look back through Trefor Jones’ website, www.watfordfcarchive.com, shows the last time such a run was achieved was in January and February 1995 when Glenn Roeder was in charge. That sequence included three FA Cup ties and it helped form a run of nine consecutive clean sheets home and away in all competitions.

Eight hours and 55 minutes of playing time have elapsed at Vicarage Road since Kaspars Gorkss scored Reading’s winner at Vicarage Road – it remains the only goal the Hornets have let in during their eight home league and cup matches since Sannino took charge.

Watford’s next match is on the road though, when they travel to Doncaster Rovers on Tuesday seeking to end a sequence of 12 away matches without a win in all competitions since they beat Huddersfield Town on October 5.

The last time the Hornets experienced such a run was in the 2009/10 season when Mackay’s side went 17 league and cup games without tasting victory on their travels before winning 4-0 at Coventry City on the final day of the campaign.

Our home record over the whole season is still poor but hopefully we've turned the corner. Let's keep it going.

International excursions apart, Watford will be well rested whereas Donnie have a Yorkshire derby v Huddersfield on Saturday.

Never a better chance for an all-action game to end our away sequence.

I hope we blinking well win up at Donnie. After many years of going all over the country and seeing pre-season stuff in Scotland and the Isle of Man, I have got out of the habit of doing distant away games but have decided to go and stay in an hotel overnight. in Doncatser. Hope for a better display than some of you saw when you went up to see the game at Bolton!!

That is why Zola got sacked after that disgraceful run of five successive HOME defeats!

We have only lost six in total, and just 2 or 3 wins from that lot would have put us seriously in the promo mix.

Diakite will be back for the Donny game so we'll need to be fresh ready for the 75 mins with only 10 men !!

You sure that Diakite will last that long!! My local, alas, is full of QPR folk. They reckon he is less than rubbish and allows the ref to fill up his report on the match. If Beppe has any sence or reason at least give Park a run out if Beppe has to do his usual thing of changing the team just to keep everyone happy.

Perhaps he was asked to fall on his sword? Isn't that the Italian way? Sacked but with honour intact.
