Troy Deeney missed out on the Football League's Goal of the Year award last night but the consolation is we have a great excuse (like we needed one) to put up the video of that breathtaking goal again.

The Hornets were leading Leicester City 2-1 in the 97th minute of the play-off semi-final second leg and with the score 2-2 on aggregate, the game looked destined for extra-time until the Foxes were awarded a penalty.

In one of the most incredible minutes in Watford history, Manuel Almunia saved Anthony Knockaert's spot-kick and the Hornets broke fast.

Fernando Forestieri crossed to the back post, Jonathan Hogg headed down and the ball dropped to the feet of Deeney, who drilled home to seal a 3-1 win, sending the Golden Boys to Wembley and sparking a mass pitch invasion at Vicarage Road.

Watch the video of Deeney's goal and the wild celebrations that ensued below. It really does never get old.

Match report: Watford reach Wembley in unbelievable fashion

Deeney was beaten to the Goal of the Year award by Coventry City's Franck Moussa for his excellent chip in a 3-1 win over Leyton Orient.

Moussa also beat off competition from Barnsley's Paddy McCourt for his goal against Middlesbrough, Bristol City's Jay Emmanuel-Thomas for his strike against Bristol Rovers and Hartlepool United's James Poole for his effort against Notts County.

On winning the award, Moussa said: "I actually thought the Troy Deeney goal was going to win, and I've also seen Jay Emmanuel-Thomas score some great goals but I was in with a shout of course.

"I definitely meant it. I went into the box, saw a gap open up and it was a deliberate shot. It dropped in the back if the net even more beautifully than I imagined.

"I've scored a goal that I would say is even better against Preston North End two months ago, so hopefully I might be back here in 12 months with some luck."

a great goal also has to be put in context. Maybe the Moussa goal was better technically, but lets see him do that in the 97th minute of the play-off second leg.... guarantee you in that situation, he lashes it over the bar.

What a gracious gent Franck is to say he thought Troy's goal was going to win. Don't mind the award going to someone like that.

Troy's and Franck's were diff types of goals and how you compare.
