Watford Swimming Club have made a strong start to the 2014 Hertfordshire County Championships with the club’s swimmer’s claiming 29 medals from the first two meets.

Clubs from across the county were represented including Hemel Hempstead, St Albans, Hertsmere, Hoddesdon, Hitchin, Bishops Stortford and Hatfield.

In the ladies’ long distance 800m freestyle events, Yazii Brand won silver while Rebecca Mackett and Sophie Burns both secured bronze. There was a gold medal for 12-year-old Oliver Taverner in the 1,500m freestyle.

Matthew Williams won gold in the men’s 100m butterfly and Francesca Peccei and Niamh Burns claimed bronze medals in the 50m butterfly.

Taverner went on to secure victories in the 50m and 100m breaststroke, Erin O'Meara won gold in the 200m breaststroke, Robyn Brett claimed silver and there was bronze for Lauren Clarkson and Lucy Park.

In the individual medley events, there were two silver medals and a bronze for Watford swimmers. In the 400m Harry Williams was victorious.

There was a third place finish for the ladies in the 4x100 relay. The Under-16s just missed out on a medal after coming fourth.

In the Hertfordshire Major Swimming League competition, Watford sit second in Division One while their second side are fifth in Division Two.
