A late Leo Roget goal cost Watford two points at Southend United, Craig Ramage having earlier given the visitors the lead.
The dropped points proved pivotal in the doomed struggle to avoid relegation.
The game also saw some fighting break out amongst Watford supporters as a result of differing positions being taken on the presence of former Luton striker Kerry Dixon in the Watford side.
