Huddersfield Town were the visitors to Vicarage Road in a fourth division fixture.
The first-half dismissals of Tony Geidmintis and Alan Mayes left the home side up against it, but two goals from leading scorer Keith Mercer yielded an unlikely victory, goalkeeper Steve Sherwood keeping a clean sheet on his home debut.
The watching crowd cheered "Keen in" in recognition of the team's spirited showing, not knowing that manager Mike Keen had already been relieved of his duties.
