John Salomon believes Watford Ladies have laid a solid foundation to build on this season after the Golden Girls’ second Women’s Super League 2 contest ended in a 1-1 home at draw with Aston Villa Ladies.

Jo Wilson scored in the first half for the Hornets but Villa hit back in the second period and Beth Merrick grabbed the equaliser.

Watford’s first two games in the newly launched division have ended as draws. It leaves the Golden Girls as one of only four unbeaten teams in the division, however, Salomon wants his side's first victory to come soon.

"Defensively we’re very pleased and I think our defensive structure has always been a strength of ours," he said.

"We’ve given ourselves a good platform to build from and the next thing now is working on the movement further up the pitch.

"The sooner that first win comes the better but we’re two games unbeaten and I think that’s a really solid foundation for us to build from now."

Sundays game against Villa was a tight affair. Watford were the better side in the first half and went in front in the 32nd minute.

Cally Rowell delivered a corner and the ball fell nicely for Wilson, who slotted home from six yards.

Villa fashioned a chance to pull level before the interval but Shayla Burgess was alert and denied Alicia Robinson’s low shot.

The visitors started the second period brightly and they equalised 11 minutes after the restart.

Merrick whipped a cross into the penalty area which evaded every player before nestling in the corner of Burgess’ goal.

Both sides had opportunities to win the game in the final half-an-hour. Sarah Wiltshire and Josie Green came close for the hosts while Chloe Jones fired over for Villa.

Watford’s defence impressed in tricky conditions and young defender Renee Hector was named player of the match.
