Matej Vydra’s agent says the striker would prefer to play for a “first division team”  but accepts Udinese will decide his future.

The Czech Republic international was Watford’s top scorer last season with 22 goals in 47 games and the Hornets are hoping to re-sign him this summer.

Vydra agreed a new five-year deal with parent club Udinese last summer and a loan move to the Premier League, with West Bromwich Albion, followed.

But it’s been a disappointing campaign for the striker who has only scored three goals in nine starts and 15 substitute appearances in all competitions.

Despite his poor season, Vydra’s representative Ondrej Chovanec believes the 22-year-old has the qualities to play in the Premier League or Serie A.

“He (Vydra) prefers to play in a first division team, Serie A or the Premier League is the same for him,” Chovanec told Italian writer Emanuele Giulianelli.

Udinese and Watford are both owned by the Pozzo family, as are Spanish side Granada.

And Chovanec said: “Vydra is a player of Udinese, they are Matej’s owners. He has the qualities to play in a top level team, so I prefer him to have the chance to show what he can do in a top competition.”

On the prospect of playing for Udinese next season, the agent added: “I don’t know. Vydra believed he would play with Udinese last year but he never had a chance to do it. All will depend on the head coach.”

Chovanec believes Vydra could have made an impact in the Udinese first-team this season but believes the striker’s experience at West Brom will benefit him in the future.

He explained: “He thinks it (the loan) has been good for him. He’s mentally much stronger now and prepared to fight in order to become a real football star."
