Two of Britain’s top female 800m runners will go head-to-head in Watford tomorrow to mark the start of the 2014 British Milers’ Club Grand Prix season.

Jenny Meadows and Lynsey Sharp will take to the track at Woodside looking to put recent injuries behind them.

A former European Championship winner, Sharp had to undergo surgery last year on a foot tendon injury which wrecked her 2013 season.

The 23-year-old will hope to recapture the form which saw her reach the semi-finals of the 800m in the 2012 London Olympic Games, when she set a personal best time of 2.00.52.

Meadows is determined to extend her career after missing out on the London Olympics – when the selectors went with Sharp – and then not racing outdoors last summer due to a stress femur fracture to her thigh bone.

The 32-year-old is now firmly on the road to recovery and is targeting the Commonwealth Games and European Championships with the ultimate ambition of qualifying for the Olympics in 2016.

Meadows and Sharp will face strong competition from Shelayna Oskan-Clarke, Rose-Anne Galligan, Emily Dudgeon, Alison Leonard, Nicola Sanders, Rowena Cole, Dawn Hunt and Claire Gibson.

Defending Watford champion Jake Wightman isn’t the fastest competitor in the men’s field but you wouldn’t bet against the 19-year-old retaining his crown.

Wightman won last year’s Watford GP en route to lifting the European Junior 1500m title later in the season. He also triumphed at the Stretford Grand Prix when he set his personal best of 1.48.01.

He will come up against Watford runner Kyle Langford, Paul Bradshaw, Ben Waterman and Niall Brooks.

But the fastest man in the field is 23-year-old Thomas Roth of Norway, who boasts a best of 1.46.88.

Double Olympic finalist Julia Bleasdale will compete in the 1500m and is up against Melissa Courtney, Morag MacLarty, Gemma Kersey and Ireland international Ciara Everard.

The men’s 1500m sees the return of 23-year-old Ross Murray, who two years ago exploded onto the scene when winning the BMC GP at Sportcity in a personal best of 3.36.69.

The meeting starts at 5.45pm and runs until 10pm. Spectators can pay £4 on the gate to watch the event.
