Watford made their first appearance in an FA Cup final at Wembley Stadium. Their opponents were Everton, who were to win both the Football League and the European Cup Winners' Cup the following season.
The Toffees won the game 2-0, the much-discussed and resented second the result of Scottish centre-forward Andy Gray heading Steve Sherwood's arm and releasing the ball from his grasp.
The Hornets were captained by aggressive midfielder Les Taylor in the absence of the suspended Wilf Rostron; this, along with an unfortunate foot injury sustained by Steve Sims, contributed to the Hornets fielding a back four with an average age of under 20.
