An improbable end-of-season run of form culminated in Watford facing Bolton Wanderers at Wembley Stadium in the first division play-off final.
A spectacular bicycle-kick from Nick Wright, the Hornets' first ever goal at Wembley, provided a half-time lead; Wright's former Carlisle United colleague Allan Smart provided a composed finish to round off a sharp counter-attack in the second half to ensure Graham Taylor's side a second successive promotion.
In securing his fifth with Watford, Taylor set a national record of promotions managing a single club.
