The Hornets are interested in signing Derby County midfielder Jeff Hendrick, the Watford Observer understands.

The 22-year-old was a regular for the Rams last season, making 35 appearances despite missing a three-month period due to injury.

Hendrick is contracted until 2015 so the Hornets would need to pay a fee for the player.

He started 11 of their final 15 games last season, and three of those missed were following a hip injury, but the Rams are hoping to sign George Thorne permanently and also have highly-rated Will Hughes, Craig Bryson and John Eustace competing for places.

Hendrick is a Republic of Ireland international and made his fifth outing for his country on Saturday when he played the full 90 minutes during the 0-0 draw with Italy.

The Irishman had trials at several clubs as a youngster, including Manchester United, Celtic and West Bromwich Albion, but was often deemed too small and also suffered with Osgood-Schlatter disease at the age of 14.

He earned a move to Derby County as a 16 year old and made his debut in April 2011.

Hendrick has gone on to make 107 starts and 22 substitute appearances for the Rams, scoring 15 times. Two of those goals came against Watford in his side's 4-2 victory in April.

Sounds good to me a regular in the Derby side he must be good. Also reported on the Sports Mole site The Hornets are interested in defender Juan Carlos Paredes a 26 yr old defender. It looks like with the signings we have and the ones we are reported to be interested in ,we are poised to make a realistic assault on the Premiership . Just need Danny and Matty to join the fold and we will be up there next May. COYH

A good young player who should improve, fits in with the Pozzo model.

He registers as homegrown too, which is important as we are short of homegrown who can genuinely push for the first eleven.

Sorry I thought it was Nyron from Sunderland after his initial loan - in January 2012. Kendrick is a good player, but will McLaren want to sell an up and coming young player to potential rival. Eustace won't play many if any games especially if they sign Thorne - who is very good. Hughes might get poached by decent Prem side like Newcastle, Villa, Southampton etc... so might not be there. I think this is unlikely, we seem to be linked to alot of players at the moment. I suspect much of this speculation rather than fact based.

I have my doubts about whether this will go through, but if it is true, it's yet another piece of evidence that we're keeping the 5 in midfield next season. Whether it's keeping the 3-5-2 or changing to 4-5-1 is still to be seen.

I can't believe we'd need so many players if we were changing to 4 in midfield - Abdi, Tozser, McGugan, Murray, Battocchio, Dyer, Anya, Pudil...

Sadly I agree, I doubt we would pay more than £1m for anyone and I don't think Derby would be interested at that price. If all our midfielders are fit then we have enough in attacking positions anyway.

As regards defensive midfielders I would prefer Thorne if Tozser does not happen, but I think it will. I suspect Thorne would prefer to stay in the midlands however.

Derby are obviously a bigger side than Watford, but it is not always about size of club. We took McGugan from your neighbours and Forest are also a bigger club than us. McGugan was tempted by the chance to work with Zola and of course we don't have him now. Might depend on what happens with McLaren and if goes who is the replacement.

He is not a £5m player and with a year left it pays the player to run his contract down to agree his own terms. Take the crumbs we may offer and be grateful. We gave your boys 2 freebies last season for the same reason there is no money in a short contract.

Got in a Westminster taxi on Friday and the driver said his son has just got in the first team. I thought - not another dreamer. He then told me his son's name and named all the other kids up and coming amongst the scholars so I decided he was telling the truth.

Anyway I mentioned the DG interest and he said Danny wants to come and the club were already on speaking to Danny for a week before Wobby found out.

gloryhornet4 - you wouldn't be pulling our whatsits would you ? Which academy player is that Doherty ? If true re Danny, be great addition to the squad, but I suspect that means that we are prepared to accept offers for Troy. Although I think Everton's initial offer of £4m is below par. I think £6-8m would satisfy the Pozzos. However as much as I admire Danny would prefer we kept Troy.

As regards Kendrick, I think going by the Derby fans comments we are not going to get him, but I am not sure he is the type of player we need. Obviously rated by them and if Prem standard now above our price range whether or not in the last year of his contract.

Still need a commanding centre half + one or possibly 2 defensive minded midfielders.

I think the Championship is going to be a fantastic league next season. Derby fans will be disappointed with Wembley like we were last term, but both our teams are going to be in with a shout along with 10-12 others. Bring it on - forget the Prem, World Cup etc, Championship is going to be amazing.

Can't see this one coming off (wasn't he captain for Derby?) but at least we are being linked with the sort of players that are needed to do well in this league. Hopefully it suggests that there has been a shift in emphasis as to how we need to progress in building a team that can seriously challenge for promotion.

I think he's good, but I think he's at his level in the Championship. There's talk of him being this up and comer with loads of potential. I see a kid who is lightweight and average skills/technical ability who every once in a while finds a pass that will catch your eye, waaaayyy too infrequent. He's also not smart in terms of what he sees on the field. I don't buy or get the hype. Good player, future star/PL player he isn't.

Maybe hendricks thinks the adverse reaction will not be well managed by the wally with the brolly.

Sounds good to me.
gloryhornet4 - you wouldn't be pulling our whatsits would you ?

Soulful,

straight up - like anyone else I question so called inside info, but this taxi driver knew far too much detail to be a bull merchant. It was Luke O'Nien.

So the Wobbo 'understands' that Watford are interested in this player. Where do the Wobbo get their info' from because my pal at Derby says £3m as an absolute minimum is the least they would consider.

I might as well jump in and say that my friend, who is from Watford, says he would be interested in Lampard coming to Watford. Free transfer too. Go on, let's see if we can start a bring Lampard campaign going. And Beckham's on a freebie too. And Cashely Cole. We'll be unstoppable!!

Floppy Chops

Is he better than Thorne or Forsyth?
Why?
Because if he is, why would Derby let him go? Both the other two have had rave reviews on the Derby Forum. Thorne looked good in the play off final. If hHendrick is not as good as Thorne, then they might sell him and use the proceeds to buy Thorne (if he is available). Forsyth has blossomed as a left back at Derby, but can step up to midfield. Again if Derby think they have options, then they might sell Hendrick.

Derby may be favourites with the bookies but don't put any money on them, they'll come back down to earth with a bump next season. You don't have to look far to see a parallel, only our Achilles heel was Nani and there's is Maclaren.
