Mike Keen was appointed as Watford manager in succession to George Kirby.
Signed by Kirby as a wing-half the previous summer, Keen had been selected from a shortlist of three that boasted trainer Bert Slater and fellow player David Woodfield.
He learned of the confirmation of his appointment while on holiday in Majorca...and also discovered that the club had accepted a record £60,000 offer from Sheffield United for Colin Franks.
