William 'Taffy' Davies was born in Troedrhiwfuwch, Glamorgan.
Signed on amateur forms by Neil McBain whilst working in the mines at 19, he soon turned professional and stayed on the club's books for 20 years spanning World War Two.
The attacking wide-man made 325 competitive appearances for the club scoring 75 goals, and averaged almost a goal every other game during 128 wartime appearances.
He was later the licensee of the Red Lion in Vicarage Road for more than 25 years.
