St Helen's School were crowned the top girls school team and won two events at the English Schools’ Swimming Association Primary Schools Team Championships.

One of three teams representing London at Ponds Forge International Sports Centre in Sheffield, St Helen’s had qualified for the 4x25m medley and the freestyle relays after winning the regional round at Woodside Stadium in March.

Both the medley and freestyle events consisted of three heats and the top 16 qualified for the A and B finals.

St Helen’s reached the A finals in both events, after being ranked third in the medley and first in the freestyle.

The team of Rosie Joslin, Amirah Otulana, Zara Hills, Simi Unercat and Irena Heppard subsequently won the medley final, touching the wall in a time of 1.05.58.

St Helen’s qualified in first place for the final of the freestyle and in a fiercely-contested climax to the competition, emerged as winners, Joslin clawed back the places from fourth in the final leg.

Head of PE at St Helen’s Jane Hurt said: “The competition was one of the most exciting and draining experiences of my life.

“The girls were superb and I am so glad to have witnessed their huge achievement.”

All of the girls are members of Hillingdon Swimming Club and club coach Leslie Westendorp said: “Amirah, Irene, Rosie, Simi and Zara, did extremely well. They really demonstrated what happens when you train hard and are enthusiastic about your sport.”
