Mitchell Dutton has been selected to represent Great Britain at the IWAS World Junior Games next month.
Dutton, 18 and from Watford, has been included in a 23-strong team for the Games which will take place at the home of Paralympic sport in Stoke Mandeville between August 3 and 8.
The former Parmiter’s School student, pictured, who now attends West Herts College, is currently ranked number one in the world as a junior after throwing 37.97m and is fourth in the senior standings.
Coach Malcolm Wallace said of the St Albans Athletics Club member: “Mitchell was classified a couple of years ago and we took the decision to train and compete with the senior men’s weights and whilst this initially put him at a disadvantage, all his recorded distances have been with the heavier implements.
“We took that decision based on knowing that within a short period of time he would grow into the heavier implements.
“I am so pleased that he has been recognised and it places him in a great position to go to Brazil in 2016,” added Wallace.
Dutton is currently studying for his BTEC level 3 at West Herts College and using his skills to support his coach by working with some of the younger members of St Albans AC, where he has the opportunity to work with both able-bodied and disabled athletes.
