Heurelho Gomes says Watford are improving “step-by-step” but admits the players are still “getting to know” one another after Thursday’s 1-0 win at Boreham Wood.

Matej Vydra got the winner with a deflected effort in the second half as the Hornets continued their pre-season schedule with victory over the Conference South side.

Gomes, who agreed to join in May following the expiration of his contract at Spurs, is one of eight summer additions at Vicarage Road – though Vydra and Daniel Tozser are returning to the club – and believes the players are still gelling.

“I think we are getting to know each other,” admitted the Brazilian. “Of course, there are lots of new players coming in and we’ve improved but it’s step-by-step and tonight was one more (step) and I believe we have enough quality to achieve what we want to this season.”

With another fixture arranged for Saturday, Beppe Sannino’s side will have played three matches in the space of a week and the 33-year-old believes the physical exertion of pre-season was a telling factor on Thursday.

He said: “The lads felt very tired today because pre-season is very tough and today their legs felt very heavy because of the work from yesterday.

“We could have created a few more chances on another day but today we couldn’t. We’ll work on it and next game we’ll be better than this one.”

Victory over Ian Allinson’s side also means Gomes is still yet to concede whilst in goal for the Hornets, and whilst the games aren’t competitive, the former PSV Eindhoven stopper isn’t turning his nose up at clean sheets.

“I haven’t conceded any goals yet from the games I’ve played in, so I’m very happy for that – like any goalkeeper that doesn’t concede goals,” confirmed Gomes. “That is what we are there for. I’m very happy to help the team and try to keep the clean sheet all the time.”
