Beppe Sannino claims every Watford player has the potential to be included in the Hornets starting XI on the opening day of the Championship season

Watford boss Beppe Sannino claims he doesn’t currently have a first-choice side and says every player has the potential to be included in the starting XI on the opening day of the Championship season.

The Italian was speaking after the Hornets completed a 5-0 pre-season friendly victory against Conference South side St Albans City.

Ikechi Anya, Mathias Ranegie, an own goal and a Cristian Battocchio brace helped the Golden Boys overcome the Saints at a sweltering Clarence Park.

Sannino used a total of 20 players throughout the contest and some who would be expected to start, such as Troy Deeney, Matej Vydra and Gabriele Angella, did not begin the contest.

The Italian head coach believes it is important to give everyone a chance to stake a place in the side ahead of the season opener with Bolton Wanderers in two weeks time.

“I had to see different players,” he explained. “Today was the time to see someone like Keith Andrews and see how he can play with the other players.

“All my players are potential players for the starting XI and that is the right thing at this stage. They could all start the first game.”

Ranegie began up front for the Hornets with Vydra and Deeney on the substitute’s bench.

Transfer speculation over Deeney’s future continues to build and when asked if that was why Ranegie led the Hornets attack, Sannino replied: “Today Watford had two teams on the pitch, one in the first half and one in the second half. Both were balanced teams and those who weren’t in the starting XI are not reserves.”

When pressed further on Deeney, the Hornets head coach said he would make no comment and stated questions over the striker’s future would have to be directed to the club.

Watford created a host of chances against the Saints and were sharper with their passing in and around the penalty area than on Thursday night against Boreham Wood.

Sannino was pleased with how his side performed, particularly in the opening period, and added: “This is another step towards the start of the Championship season. We’ve got more minutes into the legs of the players and we are on the right road.”

Tommie Hoban was again deployed at right back and once again impressed. He created the second goal for Ranegie, was comfortable in possession and defended well.

“We are waiting for (Juan Carlos) Paredes but in this moment we’ve played Lloyd Doyley and Tommie Hoban in that position,” Sannino said when asked about Hoban's display.

“It’s important to do that and playing in different positions is good for my players. It gives me and the team more possibilities.”

The Hornets again lined up in a 4-3-3 formation and the Watford head coach emphasised he and his players have worked on two systems, the other being 3-5-2, throughout pre-season.

Sannino said he will choose the formation depending on which one he believes will help win that particular match.

I made the comment tongue in cheek, at least to an extent. :P

I'm happy to give Fabbrini another chance. Believe me when I say I'd love to be proven wrong on him. If Fabbrini's done enough in training to earn his place, then sure, put him there. I just can't see it...

And also, playing in a friendly against St Albans and Boreham Wood is hardly the same as playing in the Championship... Didn't Fabbrini score a wonder goal against Granada in last year's pre-season?

Granada in same league as St Albans and Borehamwood then ? If you watch im in the last 2 games he has changed the way he plays , he gives and goes runs at players but is passing when needed rather than trying to do it all himself. Changed attitude I think a great player in out squad

Well, that was rather the point. Granada are surely better than St Albans and Boreham Wood, and he scored a wondergoal against them preseason last year, before only scoring 1 all season. Good performances pre-season don't necessarily transfer to good performances in season.

Again, I would love to be proven wrong, and I made the original comment mostly as a joke anyway.

We have supports who think the club is alway right, always wrong (and they are the person to sort things out) and people in between, I am one of these I hope. I do not see why some comments should alway get some personal and quite nasty responses, after all we aparently support the same team. After everything it is very easy to hide behind a keyboard to be vile.

I can see where Beppe Sannino is with this comment, he is encouraging all the players. Obviously some are probables and others are possibles but if you were a newer/younger/less experienced member of the squad would you prefer to play for a manager who said everyone has a chance or I know my team? After all the probables are in a far better position anyway.

I think a lot of wfc supporters have there doubts if sannino is the right man for the coming season based on what he achieved in 26 games he never made an impact with a very good squad of players ie was unable to produce a wining run of games our discipline was very poor and must be improved, our defending must improve big time, we have 5 or 6 new signings, for the coming season, he has had half a season to **** the players & the championship, bring in new players (I hope he had some input on the new signings!!) if deeney goes then we are in a similar situation to the start of last season this time again the coach needs to find a striking partnership that works vydra /ranegie!!,the way last season (last 5 games) finished & performances particularly at home its no surprise he has his doubters, the pozzos obviously like what they have seen of him!! I think he will need to get of to a good start, looking at the first 10 games 20 plus points looks doable and should get the doubters of his back anything less then its over to the pozzos !!if we do change coach yet again, lets have british one with a good championship cv, but I really hope beppe is the man to take us to the prem, so lets give the man a chance & at least get behind him & the team for the first 10 games at least COYH

I said basically the same thing a couple of days ago and got a 100
thumbs down, broke my little heart it did.

I don't think were to far of the mark though
first championship manager to go?
Same people backing Sannino are the lot who wouldn't have a bad word said against Bassini! They will argue that's not the case but they all know who they are..
I distinctly remember you calling for Dyches head very early on in his managerial career with us.
Is it beyond reason to think you might be wrong on Sannino too?

Very charitable of you to wait until August 9th before casting judgement.
