Paul Wilkinson and Willie Falconer left Watford for second division rivals Middlesbrough, who were promoted to the top flight the following season.

Wilkinson had been the club's leading scorer in each of his three seasons at Vicarage Road; Falconer had been employed largely in midfield or at left-back, but spent much of his long subsequent career as a striker.

The transfer deal was a part-exchange, with the Hornets receiving £700,000 plus midfielder Trevor Putney, who had scored in Watford's centenary game against Arsenal whilst still a Middlesbrough player the previous week.
