Callum Shinkwin finished in joint eighth place at the Le Vaudreuil Golf Challenge last weekend but the Bushey golfer was frustrated it wasn’t higher.

The 21-year-old ended the competition ten under par but was six shots off the eventual winner Andrew Johnston.

Shinkwin, who practices at Moor Park Golf Club, started off strongly and carded a five under par 66 in his first round.

He was unable to sustain that form on the second day of the competition and posted a one over par 72.

However, scores of 67 and 69 followed on the third and fourth days of the Challenge Tour event and that gave him an overall total of 274. That was enough for joint eighth and €5,040 in prize money.

Shinkwin was pleased with his final placing but admitted he could have finished higher if he was more consistent during his rounds.

"I was playing well and I was striking the ball as well as I have done all year," he explained. "I also started to chip and putt very well.

"The only frustrating thing for me was when I got in a groove, I just wasn't able to stay there for more than five or six holes.

"I would throw in a scrappy par or a bogey. If I hadn’t done that then I would’ve been able to finish higher."

Shinkwin’s performances on the Challenge Tour have guaranteed him a card for the 2015 tour. He has now set his sights on achieving a European Tour Card but needs to finish in the top 20 standings in terms of prize money.

Croxley Green’s Sam Little was also in action in France but finished down the field in joint 52nd.

The 39-year-old was one under par after his first round but posted a one over par 72 on the second day of the event.

Two par scores of 71 followed for Little which meant he finished with a par 284 for his four rounds. He scooped €790 in prize money.

Both Little and Shinkwin flew from France to Azerbaijan for the Azerbaijan Golf Challenge Open, which begins tomorrow.

Shinkwin didn’t want to discuss how he thought he’d perform at the event but was feeling confident in his game.

He said: "I never like to say how I think I'm going to do before a tournament. But I can tell you I'm still hitting the ball well and chipping and putting well, so hopefully my result will be where my game feels it is at the moment."
