The Hornets have submitted a £1.2m bid for Real Betis’ versatile player Juanfran, the Watford Observer understands.

Not to be confused with the Atletico Madrid defender of the same name, Juanfran is a right-sided player who can play at full back, midfield or further forward.

Watford have submitted a bid of 1.5m euros for the Spaniard, who turns 26 in 11 days, and if accepted, will hope to conclude the deal before Monday’s transfer deadline.

Andalusian publication Estadio Deportivo have also reported on the potential move and claim it is very close to being completed and that he has been offered a four-year contract.

Estadio Deportivo claim Juanfran has previously turned down the chance to join his old Real Madrid coach Aitor Karanka at Middlesbrough.

Juanfran started his career at Getafe and made appearances in La Liga and the UEFA Cup before joining Villarreal B for a season.

He earned a move to Real Madrid B and impressed enough to be handed a debut for the full side in May 2010, when he was an 84th-minute substitute for Fernando Gago during the 3-2 victory over Osasuna.

He was given an additional 21 minutes during the 2-0 defeat against Levante in the Copa del Rey the following January.

Juanfran was a regular for Real Madrid B in the Spanish second division prior to joining Real Betis on a free transfer in the summer of 2013.

He made 48 appearances for Betis last season in La Liga, Europa League and the Copa del Rey but they finished bottom in their domestic campaign and were relegated. Juanfran has not featured for Betis so far this season.

Seems like a player who can play a few positions. Im not complaining but how many players are we allowed in our squad? I can see a few more faces going out on loan. Im sure the pozzos know what their doing and its always exciting with this squad!

look, I love the ambition of the Pozzos and the way they have turned this club on its head,we see things happen we could only dream before.

But,and here I go_ this squad is massive and dare I say unwieldy now.

If were still buying though how about that commanding CB we need,
one with a cooler disposition however.

Wow - I understand everyone's concern about the size of the squad but this is surely an example of the pozzo's model debris king transfers for the club and the player - if it doesn't work out they can move him to Granada - Middlesbro wouldn't have hat option. I wondered if someone had made a bid for Paredes already when I saw this story.

If you've ever been to Middlesbro you would know that hats are always optional and wearing one is very much at the discretion of the individual :-)

I am not sure we need Juanfran, whoever he is. It seems we have many players like him. We do need a central defender because I have doubts about Tamas and Ekstrand. We also need a goalkeeper because Gomez is, in my opinion, a bit suspect to a high ball and, like Almunia, prefers punching to catching, which oftens causes problems.

Regarding the team selection, the only thing which surprised me was

1/ Hoban - played great against Rotherham and Leeds during Ekstrand's ban and then is left out on Ekstrand being eligible to play. Anyone else think this was harsh?

2/ Anya - I thought he was terrible against Doncaster (ok they all were) - so was surprised he started

3/ Why did Sannino wait 10 minutes before bringing Hoban on after Tamas red card?

Gomes is very comfortable in the air, punches much less than Almunia, his weakness is his handling as shown with the disallowed goal on saturday. Tamas, who was stupid on saturday should play at the centre of the back 3 as he is stronger in the air than Angella and Ekstrand and is slower so wont find him in situations like saturday

Agree with all, HemelHorn. Tamas looked uncomfortable against Doncaster in the back four as he often had to go out wide. The problem is, I think Angella, Tamas and Ekstrand all look better in the centre.

Cristiano Ronaldo to Watford? Nah, it'll never happen while we persist with squad rotation. I bet he's the type of player who wouldn't be happy left on the bench for 3 or 4 games!!
