Oscar Garcia's first game as Watford head coach ended in a 1-0 win against Hemel Hempstead Town in a behind-closed-doors friendly at London Colney.

The Spaniard, who succeeded Beppe Sannino on Tuesday, took charge of a strong Hornets side, which included those who had not received international call-ups.

Diego Fabbrini scored the game’s only goal in the first of two 30-minute periods, following good work from Odion Ighalo.

Watford set up in a 4-3-3, with first-year professional Jorell Johnson at left-back. Heurelho Gomes was in goal, with Lloyd Doyley, Gabriele Angella and Joel Ekstrand making up the rest of the defence.

Sean Murray, Keith Andrews and Lewis McGugan comprised the midfield, whilst Ighalo was flanked by Fabbrini and Lloyd Dyer.

Nice build-up play between Ighalo and Dyer saw the latter round the Hemel Hempstead goalkeeper only to overrun the ball with the goal gaping.

The Hornets took the lead after 19 minutes, Ighalo cleverly beating the offside trap before squaring for Fabbrini to convert from a yard out.

Garcia made a handful of changes at the break, introducing captain Troy Deeney, midfielders Connor Smith and George Byers, young keeper Shaun Rowley and Luke O'Nien at left-back.

Watford kept the Conference South side at arms’ length after the re-start, with Deeney seeing several shots blocked and Smith’s low effort saved as the Hornets eased to a win.

Watford: Gomes (Rowley); Doyley, Angella, Ekstrand, Johnson (O’Nien); Murray, Andrews (Byers), McGugan (Smith); Fabbrini, Ighalo (Deeney), Dyer.

What's more important, entertaining but losing matches or playing negative football the Garcia way and winning.

I would say the latter if it gets us promotion.

Will have to wait and see what his formation is....Beppe followed GZ with an attacking 3-5-2, BS did look for alternatives in the summer but it looked abit flat and kind of returned to 3-5-2....it may be the way our players have adapted to playing with the kind of players we have..I hope OG recognises this as the system has done so well in the past....whether he uses it or has other ideas we will have to wait and see.

I believe it was a 'youth loan' Poole-Horn, which means the player can return to the parent club between matches to train or, as in this case, play in friendlies.

The biggest flaw with 352 is the vulnerability down the wings which teams regularly target Watford with. Huddersfield had lots of joy Saturday which shows it's still a problem. But it's also great for counter attacking football which with abdi and pace in the team suits us well. Maybe oscars first dilemma will be formation?

The best asset we have is our attacking ability. Troy, fernando and vydra all work best with two up top. We have played 433 on a number of occasions this season albeit in friendlies and we haven't had a convincing win in any. Play to our strength and play with what we are familiar with!!

Hemel Hempstead are only a part time team (they all have other jobs), this was just a friendly and means nothing except giving the manager a chance to see some of his players and how they read a game.

it could be, attacking football like 352 can score goals and goals win games but as important is to have a mean defensive line as a clean sheet wont lose games...it will be very interesting to see what his tactics will be.

I hope that we don't go back to 4-3-3 as we've looked so dull when we've tried it recently. Yes I like us to win but I also go to be entertained, if I wanted to watch dull 1-0 games every week I'd start watching Serie A.
