Watford restricted Brighton and Hove Albion to just two shots on target in Saturday’s 1-1 draw. Unfortunately one of them led to an equaliser but Hornets head coach Billy McKinlay said his makeshift defence was outstanding.
With injuries to Craig Cathcart, Gabriel Tamas and Gabriele Angella, McKinlay drafted Lloyd Doyley into centre-half while central defender Tommie Hoban was deployed at left back.
It’s a testament to the defence that Heurelho Gomes was largely untested and Watford boss McKinlay was pleased with his back-four that also contained Joel Ekstrand and Juan Carlos Paredes, who was named man of the match by the sponsors.
