The next meeting of the RSPB Watford Local Group will be on Wednesday 11 December, when Peter Holden will throw some light on the mysteries of migration in his talk Born to Travel. Peter, who formerly worked for the RSPB, set up the Big Garden Birdwatch, the annual survey of garden birds which we can all join in. The meeting will be held at the Stanborough Centre, Stanborough Park Church, 609 St Albans Road Watford WD25 9JL starting at 8pm. Doors open at 7.30pm. Entrance costs £3, which includes light refreshments. All are welcome.

The new season of activities for the RSPB Watford Local Group opens on Wednesday 11 September with a talk by our local naturalist Andy Sands on Secret Britain – A Journey Through Nature. As usual our meeting will be held at the Stanborough Centre, Stanborough Park Church, 609 St Albans Road Watford WD25 9JL starting at 8pm, doors open at 7.30pm. The Watford Round Table’s 10k Fun run took place in Cassiobury Park on the May Bank Holiday and was a great success, raising just under £19,000 of which Watford Mencap will receive half and the rest will be divided between other great local causes.

On Friday 5th July, 53 participants from five local youth groups spent the night outside, in the grounds of Watford Grammar School for Boys, to take part in Watford New Hope Trust’s annual Summer Sleepout.

Our next indoor meeting will be held on Wednesday 12 June. Following a short AGM three of our members will give illustrated talks about birds they have seen at home and abroad. This will be the final indoor meeting of this season, the new season starts in September. Our next local John Hurrell walk will be on Thursday 20 June in Cassiobury Park.

This year, local company Affinity Water (formerly Veolia) will celebrate a 30 year partnership with global charity WaterAid. The Ricky Road Run, which is operated by Affinity, is WaterAid’s oldest event and, in its 30th year, a Watford-based charity will also enjoy an involvement with the event.

Local charity Watford New Hope Trust (WNHT) has this month welcomed its new CEO, Matthew Heasman. Mr Heasman replaces Mike Smith, who retired last month after leading the charity for almost six years. Mr Heasman joins WNHT from the education sector, where he has served for more than 20 years.

At 10.30am on Saturday 1st June, Watford will see the launch of its first dedicated second-hand electrical store. The HopeWorks shop, located at 87 Queens Road, Watford, is part of an initiative by local charity Watford New Hope Trust (WNHT).

During the awards ceremony on Thursday 21st March, the High Sheriff of Hertfordshire, Arabella Stuart-Smith, gave a personal award to Polly Odburt, who has voluntarily managed Watford New Hope Trust’s (WNHT) Watford charity shop for 20 years.

A new book by Dr Yordan Kalev Zhekov, Housing Management Supervisor at Watford New Hope Trust, was published in February and is now available to buy. The book evidences the relationship between conscience, addiction, spirituality and recovery.

Wednesday 10 April Jonathan Forgham will give an illustrated talk on The Carmargue. This great wetland region, at the mouth of the River Rhone in southern France, may be famous for its horses but it is an amazing area for birds too. The meeting will be held at the Stanborough Centre, starting at 8pm, doors open at 7.30pm. There will be John Hurrell walks in Ver Valley, St Albans, on Thursday 21 March, and at Tyttenhanger, London Colney,on Wednesday 24 April.

Watford Mencap will be out in force on Sunday 9th September between 1:00 - 5:00PM at the Bandstand Marathon in Watford Town Centre. As the Nominated Charity for the Watford event, Watford Mencap volunteers and residents from our Hillside project will be holding buckets and asking for as many donations as possible.

Three Year 9 girls from Rickmansworth School did a sterling job at the Youth and Philanthropy Initiative (YPI) Grand Final. Sponsored by Capital Shopping Centres Group PLC, it took place on Tuesday 24th April at Rickmansworth School. Monique Page, Mariam Abbas and Aisha Waheed beat 6 other finalists to the first prize of £3000 for their chosen charity, Watford Mencap.

David Elcome will be the speaker at our next indoor meeting on Wednesday 11 April. The meeting will start at 8pm at the Stanborough Centre, Stanborough Park Church, 609 St Albans Road, Watford WD25 9JL. Entry costs £3, including light refreshments and all are welcome. David, a retired officer from the RSPB, will give the non-birding talk of the season on “Wild Orchids”. He has long been interested in these amazing plants and will describe their bizarre lifestyles, with tales of bribery, deception and seduction.

A Network Rail cost manager from Canterbury, Barry Bray, has decided to run the London Marathon for Watford Mencap in memory of his father-in-law, Ron Hutton, who died last November. Ron, who lived in Rudolph Road, Bushey, will be remembered as an indefatigable fundraiser for Watford Mencap. Barry recalls, ‘Ron used to be out in his estate car collecting milk bottle tops and for jumble sales, and he used to help out with swimming at the old Watford Baths behind the Town Hall.’ Barry, 53, is married to Ros, twin sister of Monica Hutton who lives in Watford Mencap’s residential home, Hillside, in Pinner Road. She first came there during her late mother’s illness in 1974. Local parents of young women with learning disabilities clubbed together to open Hillside in 1970, at a time when many people were shut away in institutions.
