Bees in February, back to birds in March

At the Group’s meeting on 10 February local beekeeper Tony Smith gave a most fascinating talk about Bees, Honey and Health. He described the community which develops in the hive, how the bees protect it and how the thousands of insects communicate with each other about the best places to collect nectar and pollen. The honey which they make to feed their next generation is also a very healthy source of food for us. Having been known for its medicinal properties in the past, honey is becoming recognised again for its healing properties, both though eating it and using it for its beneficial use on wounds. One the most recent developments has been the use of bee toxin in the treatment for arthritis.

At our next meeting on 10 March Peter Holden MBE will give us a special talk which he calls “A Celebration of Birds”. Having been with the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds for 40 years, Peter offers a personal view of the Society, the birds and some of the people who have shaped nature conservation in Britain today. The talk, at St Thomas Church Centre in Langley Road Watford WD17 4PN, will start at 8pm, doors open at 7.30pm. All are welcome. The entry charge of £2.50 includes light refreshments. Nesting activity is now underway, please avoid disturbing the birds and try to provide suitable nest sites!
