A Watford resident, a retired employee of Barclays Bank, has secured matched funding from the Bank and has chosen Watford Mencap as his charity.

The volunteer, who is actively involved in helping out with leisure activities for the charity, organised a Valentine disco this month with a group of other volunteers to raise a total in excess of £500.

Furthermore, the money raised will be matched pound for pound, up to £750, as part of the Barclays Community investment ‘Charity Begins at Work’ Programme, bringing the total to £1117.

Jeannie Marsh, Community Coordinator for Barclays said, “At Barclays we strive to strengthen local communities in which we live and work by supporting a range of causes. This is a fantastic example of Barclays staff fundraising with the local community to achieve something which we hope will make a real and lasting difference.”

At Barclays, we take our responsibilities seriously. We’re really proud of our leading community investment programme which added up to £52.2 million in 2008.

• More than 57,000 people were involved in volunteering, fundraising and regular giving.

• We supported more than 7,000 charities around the world.

A spokesperson for Watford Mencap said, “We are very grateful for any support, donations or time you are able to give. It enables us to provide a wide range of services that help meet the needs of over 500 children and adults, whom we support in Watford and South West Hertfordshire, in order that they have greater choice and opportunities throughout their lives”.
