HM Lord Lieutenant of Hertfordshire, The Countess of Verulam and the high sheriff of Hertfordshire lord Charles Ceil on Thursday 8th September 2011 paid an official visit to the Lincolnsfields children’s education charities Bushey children’s centre. They arrived at the centre and were met by Brian Linnegar and Phil knight trustees of the charity along with Amber the member of staff responsible for volunteers and the 1940s project. After an overview of the set up and aims of the charity they undertook a tour of the 70 bed residential centre and its facilities which is the central part the charity, before moving on to the 1940s living history project which is set up to teach the young people about the realities of living through the 1940s as well as to preserve the centers history as the US eight air force fighter command headquarters during WW2 (the American equivalent of Bentley priory and as most of the buildings are original of the period). The Lord Lieutenant and high sheriff were shown through part of the project while having it explained what our volunteers teach the young people who attend, they started in the history corridor which teaches about the life styles of the time including the money, rationing, make do and mend and includes displays on the toys and games and cloths of the time also the books available etc. The corridor includes a section of the history of the site and area and leads into the 40s house (civilian side of 1940s) which includes a bedroom, sitting room and kitchen all set out with original period items that our volunteers explain their context. The visit moved on to the dig for victory garden and anderson shelter before ending in the military museum (the military side of war). The visit was time restricted and so it finished here but only after a description of the things they did not have time to see the Naffi Cafe, evacuee school and blitz experience. The Lord Lieutenant and high sheriff thanked those present and moved on to their next appointment.
