The Herts Sports Partnership will be staging its annual Service to Sport Awards at the Weston Auditorium, University of Hertfordshire, on Wednesday, October 7.
The event recognises the achievements of some of Hertfordshire’s tens of thousands of sports volunteers and, since its inception in 2004, has established itself as an eagerly anticipated inclusion in the county’s sporting calendar.
The county’s community sports programmes are totally dependent on the goodwill of these volunteers, who selflessly give up their time so that others may enjoy their sport.
From the tea ladies to the grounds men; from the kit handlers to the first aiders; from the fixture secretaries to the referees; from the coaches to the parents; and from the league organisers to the club treasurers, sport owes a massive debt of gratitude to these individuals.
The Service to Sport Awards event aims to recognise a few of those, as a token of appreciation of the wider sporting community.
Presented by BBC Radio 5 Live’s David Croft, the evening will also see the appearance of a number of young hopefuls from the Herts Elite Athlete Support programme, co-ordinated by the Hertfordshire Sports Village.
Last year’s event attracted some 400 people and those with an interest in sport can now reserve their ticket for the 2009 Awards Ceremony by contacting Lynsay Evans on 01707 28100 or email L.A.1.Evans@herts.ac.uk.
Tickets for the event are free and include light refreshments and a chance to rub shoulders with some of Britain’s Beijing Olympians who will be the guests of the organisers, the Herts Sports Partnership.
