A Network Rail cost manager from Canterbury, Barry Bray, has decided to run the London Marathon for Watford Mencap in memory of his father-in-law, Ron Hutton, who died last November. Ron, who lived
in Rudolph Road, Bushey, will be remembered as an indefatigable fundraiser for Watford Mencap. Barry recalls, ‘Ron used to be out in his estate car collecting milk bottle tops and for jumble sales,
and he used to help out with swimming at the old Watford Baths behind the Town Hall.’ Barry, 53, is married to Ros, twin sister of Monica Hutton who lives in Watford Mencap’s residential home,
Hillside, in Pinner Road. She first came there during her late mother’s illness in 1974. Local parents of young women with learning disabilities clubbed together to open Hillside in 1970, at a time
when many people were shut away in institutions.
