Merchant Taylors hold Fun Day for Watford Mencap

Around 40 adults and children with learning disabilities from Watford Mencap enjoyed a fun day organised by Year 12 students at Merchant Taylors School in Northwood earlier this month.

The guests were able to enjoy a range of activities including swimming, sailing, art and sports.

And there were some unusual activities too, such as trifle making!

Team races completed a packed and enjoyable day.

Student, Tristan Spencer who was one of the volunteers said: “It was a great day for everyone who took part. The highlight for me was the team work between students and their guests.

Another volunteer, Keval Shah, also runs the schools club for Physically Handicapped and Able Bodied people, known as PHAB. The club is in its 40th year of organising holiday camps for local disabled teenagers.

He said of the day: “This was a wonderful opportunity for Taylors’ boys to play a wider role in society and understand some of the issues facing disabled people.”

The fun day was organised by Freya Teskey and Dominic Howell, staff at the school and was supported by a large number of staff and volunteers together with Watford Mencap.

The organisation supports 500 people with a learning disability and their carers in South West Herts.
