The Group's season nears its close with the AGM on 8 June

At our meeting on 11 May Chris Ward gave us an illustrated talk about wildlife in the North and east of Majorca. His excellent photographs and his inclusive presentation made it a most enjoyable experience even for those who had not visited the island.

Unfortunately the Dawn Chorus walk was not supported and only the organisers had excellent views of the attractive mandarin ducks in the park.

The John Hurrell walk on 17 May in Whippendell Woods was attended by 8 people who saw graceful terns and both song and mistle thrush among the 26 species seen.

Our final coach trip of the season took 33 people to the New Forest and Keyhaven. In the forest the highlights were wood warbler, redstart and Dartford warbler, the latter 2 being some of the most colourful of our small birds. On the coast were terns and eider ducks, the males very smart in their white and black plumage.

Our next local John Hurrell walk will be at Ver Valley on Tues 14 June, meeting at the Verulamium car park at 10am.

Our next indoor meeting will be on Wed 8 June at St Thomas Church Centre in Langley Road Watford at 8pm. After a short Annual General Meeting there will be a quiz in support of Ann and the late Bob Scott’s campaign to tackle the deforestation threatening birdlife in sub-Saharan Africa. We shall also be holding our annual photographic competition during the evening.
