Undertaker takes Yopey crown

An undertaker who spends his free time helping people with mental health problems has been named Young Person of the Year.

David King volunteers once a week at the Guideposts Trust, a charity based in Watford that provides support for people with mental health issues.

And the 22-year-old, from Southfield Avenue, Watford, was named the overall winner at the Yopey Awards for Watford, Hertsmere and Three Rivers.

He said: "I was shocked. I didn't expect it. I didn't expect to win at all.

"Yopey's really good because it raises awareness of different people and what they are doing in the local community. They are recognising good for a change. It's so easy to get bogged down with stories in the press of Asbos and muggings."

The Junior Award winner was Katherine Eldridge, 16, who cares for her disabled mother, and her brother and sister, at their home in The Trumbs, north Watford.

The two runners-up were Craig Osmond, 18, who secured a £7,000 grant for the West Hyde and Maple Cross Youth Club to create an internet cafe; and Aaron Crossley, 16, who reminded teachers and pupils at Francis Coombe School of the importance of Rembrance Day.

For full coverage of the Awards, and the winners' stories, see Friday's Watford Observer.
