Watford will need to prove exactly why they had the best away record in the Championship this season at the KC Stadium on Wednesday if they are to get to the play-off final at Wembley after Hull City claimed a 2-0 first leg advantage at Vicarage Road this afternoon.

Goals from Nick Barmby and Dean Windass put the visitors in the ascendancy before the Hornets suffered another blow when John Eustace appeared to be the victim of a harsh red card.

But the margin of victory was tough on the Hornets, who produced one of their better home displays of the campaign but could find no way past keeper Boaz Myhill and his resolute defence.

Most of the signs in the build-up to the game were that Aidy Boothroyd would bring in Tamas Priskin to replace the suspended Darius Henderson, but the manager shelved that idea and instead opted to bring in Lionel Ainsworth, suggesting that a change in formation was on the cards.

Boothroyd's counterpart Phil Brown, meanwhile, made two changes to the side that went down 1-0 at Ipswich Town in the last game of the regular season, with Richard Garcia and Barmby replacing Dean Marney and Caleb Folan.

Watford started with a 4-3-3 formation, with Ainsworth and Jobi McAnuff providing the support to Nathan Ellington from out wide, and it was the home side that had the first sniff of an opening inside two minutes when Tommy Smith glanced a Mat Sadler corner from the right well wide.

Within 90 seconds McAnuff did very well to cut in between two opponents on the left and produce a blistering right-footed effort that was deflected over. From McAnuff's resultant corner, the Hornets thought they had taken the lead when Dan Shittu rose to power home a close-range header, but referee Kevin Friend adjudged that Leigh Bromby had impeded keeper Myhill.

More controversy followed soon after when Windass went in late on Richard Lee but the referee let the veteran striker off with a good talking to.

But after eight minutes Vicarage Road was plunged into silence. Following a Hornets throw on the left that was flicked on, the ball was played back towards the Watford area and a complete misunderstanding saw Shittu and Sadler both go up to challenge for the ball and only succeed in diverting the ball into the path of Fraizer Campbell, who cut in from the right side of the area and picked out the unmarked Barmby and he made no mistake from ten yards to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead.

However, that blow didn't seem to affect the Hornets too much, although they had to wait until the 15th minute for their next opening when Ellington was unable to turn a McAnuff cross from the left on target after good work by the Hornets' wide-man, Smith and Lee Williamson.

The Hull boss then complained vociferously when he thought his side should have been awarded a penalty after Garcia appeared to be shoved in the back in the area, before Ainsworth sent over a good cross from the right that Ellington was unable to get to.

But Watford were undone by Hull's thought and movement again after 22 minutes. Garcia played a delightful cross-field pass from left to right to Barmby, who fed the overlapping Andy Dawson. His cross was met by Campbell, whose header looked to be going in but was deflected onto the bar by Bromby, but Windass reacted sharply to head in the rebound and give the visitors a very healthy 2-0 lead.

The Hornets could have one back five minutes later when more good work by McAnuff created an opening for Elington, but he was closed down quickly by Dawson and his eventual effort was deflected behind.

But from possibly being 2-1 down Watford could have found themselves trailing 3-0 when a shocking error by Lloyd Doyley let in Campbell, who teed up Windass, but the striker could only harmlessly lift the ball into the arm's of Lee.

But McAnuff, who was Watford's brightest light in the first-half, brought the best out of Myhill after 36 minutes with a sweetly-struck rising right-footed drive that the keeper did very well to tip over. From Sadler's resultant corner, Smith really should have scored, but he appeared to lose the flight of the ball and glanced it wide of a near open target from barely three yards out.

The Hornets continued to have plenty of possession around the Hull box in the run-up to the break, but the build-up was very ponderous at times and lacking tempo.

Campbell rather stupidly got himself booked just before the interval for delaying a free-kick, before a well-struck Smith effort from the edge of the area forced Myhill to tip over.

Despite the scoreline - and in a marked contrast to recent home games when they have been trailing - Watford were applauded from the pitch as the faithful did their best to encourage the players, despite trailing 2-0.

The Hornets made a positive start to the second period and almost got one back three minutes in when Doyley's long throw was flicked on by Shittu and deflected onto the roof of the bar. From the resultant corner, Ellington got down at the near post to glance goalwards but Myhill made a smart save. But that was nothing compared to what was to follow moments later.

Some neat footwork by Shittu towards the left saw him create a crossing opportunity, but he pulled the ball back towards the edge of the area where Sadler met it perfectly with a left-footed volley that was heading inside Myhill's right-hand post until the keeper somehow got across full length to push it behind.

There were signs that temperatures were beginning to boil over and they did just short of the hour when Eustace went in to challenge the grounded Garcia, who proceeded to roll over clutching his ankle. The Watford skipper did get involved in a pushing match thereafter but there appeared to be no real justification for the red card the referee produced afterwards.

The Hornets also lost Shittu to injury during the stoppage in play and he was replaced by Jay DeMerit. Craig Fagan then came on to replace Barmby and Windass made way for Folan. In between times though, Smith forced another good stop out of Myhill after a McAnuff corner found him unmarked at the far post.

But Campbell spurned a great opportunity to put the tie out of reach after 72 minutes when he was put clear on goal, but Lee came off his line and blocked his shot. Boothroyd played his hand soon after, bringing on John-Joe O'Toole and Priskin for Doyley and Ainsworth, while Nathan Doyle came on for Garcia.

Priskin's impact was almost immediate, doing well to dispossess Sam Ricketts on the left before rifling in a shot that Myhill could only push back out into the area. Then a long Bromby free-kick came within inches of picking out the diving DeMerit at the far post, while at the other end Doyle shot straight at Lee.

But Doyle came within inches of putting the tie to bed after 81 minutes with a left-footed curling shot that beat the dive of the Watford keeper but rebounded out off his right-hand post.

The Hornets kept looking for a potentially priceless goal and they almost got it twice in the closing stages when, first, Brombt had a shot blocked, and then Priskin headed narrowly wide of Myhill's right-hand upright from a DeMerit cross.

But in injury-time, Lee was forced to make a fine save to keep out Campbell's curling effort after the on-loan striker had turned Bromby inside out.

Just got home - hard to see things being turned around now.

Certainly had no luck today. However, bearing in mind we won one of our last 14 in the regular season, and lost our last three at home, we probably used up our luck by just staying in the top six.

I wonder if those behind the scenes are nervously thumbing through the famous 'plan B'?

2:23pm Sun 11 May 08

That was the best we've played in a long time.
The ref was a biased fool and spoilt the game for us.
Eustace shouldn't have been sent off but his reaction might well earn him another ban and fine.
Most of the team played well, although defensively all bar Lee were found wanting.
Hull will score in the second leg so we have, virtually,no chance.
It's a shame Hoofers only changed to 451(or 4411 if you prefer)when he became desperate because several weeks of this formation would have resulted in different results/performances
.
Let's hope for our fair share of luck on Wednesday and a better ref.

Is the ref's name ironic? Mr Friend. He is not mine. At least we have away advantage on the second leg. Too many times this season refs have not given penalties when it has not been obvious it was a penalty, but have sent off players when there is no way it was an obvious red card offence even without the hindsight of a TV replay. Spoils the game.

Loidis, Norway says...
2:38pm Sun 11 May 08

I was probably not the only one who said "this is not going to be Watford's day", when the referee wrongly disallowed Shittu's goal.

But this tie is not over. An early Watford-goal at Hull, and it's game on!

It's not going to be easy, but this is not a mission impossible!

Vicar Rage, says...
2:46pm Sun 11 May 08

Loidis - I wish I shared your spirit!

We had our chances to day, but generally from distance. If we were getting behind teams more, I'd fancy us.

Plus, we've only score more than one goal in one of our last 12 games.

I think a clean sheet is the key on Wednesday. If we concede, I think it's curtains.

who the hell was that ref........

obviously all the good ones are reffing prem games today.

i thought we played really well (apart from 2 lapses in defence costing 2 goals!) and if it wasn't for their keeper (myhill) and the ref we could have won convincingly!

if only we could have nicked a goal back....

Mark, Watford says...
3:05pm Sun 11 May 08

In the main compared to most of the home performances that was not bad but 2 defensive errors and bad decisions by the ref cost us.

Cannot see us getting 3 goals sadly at the KC.

Oh well...felt more positive with some of the guys that n the past.

Ellington however can just go elsewhere if he's not going to bother up front because the otherwise attacking players did try.

Our defence was shaky everywhere I have to say and did not see what Eustace did exactly.

Oh well...we were never good enough to go up.

well well another hull opinion.

First and foremost we were beaten fairly by Barnsley and clapped their team off...then we were beaten by Scunthorpe and again applauded their team off, then today we were beaten by a team that cheated, had the ref in their pocket hoofed the ball far more than us and who had an excellent goalkeeper.

Shittu has more class than your no 15 will ever attain, and yes our centre halves made a bad mistake each but then Shittu had scored a goal.

Your manager seemed unable to stay in his area saw fouls that werent and ignored fouls that were...a bit like his mate Mr Friend.

Based on the two games so far Bristol played by far the better football, but the three other teams would struggle badly in the premier.

We have at last started to see a team play football and subject to some fine tuning must have a great chance next year.

Message for Sage..hope you watched Myhill he was the difference today...and maybe just maybe in the next 90 mins we will give a very arrogant hull a game to humble them.

I have to say that was the best we have played in a while. Doyley though was very poor, a man of his experience in these games should do better.

Hull are most likely to go through now but if they do go up hope they enjoy the one season as they will not survive, as will none of the teams promoted in the play-off.

As for you Tigrr hull, did you not see the rows of empty seats in your end or couldnt you see that from your armchair? Very good performance today with the keeper and the ref being the only thing between us and a great victory. Shittu goal wrongly ruled out, Eustace wrongly red carded, expect that to be rescinded. Aidy got the selection and tactics right except for Doyley and as poor as Priskin has been i think he wiuld have poached a couple today with the amount of chances we created around the 6 yard box in the first half. Well, we all got our wish.....Ts up front behind Ne, didn't really work did it?
Seemed odd at this late stage to try something different, should of happened weeks ago!
Shocking refereeing decisions for both teams but you couldn't exactly call him a homer.
Doyley was absolutely pants and should be discarded from now on, didn't think Sadler did anything more than what Stewart would have done, far too early for LA to be involved and didn't benefit us at all.
JM had a great 1st half especially but faded, too much tracking back for covering Williamson who I thought had an in out game, NE....enough said.
On positives, JD was great when finally coming on (shouldn't be on the bench) and Priskin unusually looked good.
RL as i've often said worries me greatly, thought he could have done better with opening goal.
Didn't think much of Hull and thought they didn't deserve there win, not much to them, that Ian Ashby is just a thug in the middle and should be sorted out in the 2nd leg.

We lost because the referee was the poorest I have seen since Rob Styles. In fact, he was worse than Rob Styles! Shittu's goal was a good one and unfairly disallowed. Eustace should not have been sent off. We can appeal against the red card - pity we cannot appeal against the referee's other appalling decisions.
I am glad AB chose Ainsworth. I thought, however, he was wrong to take him off. Doyley was dreadful; Ellington was awful; Priskin should have been brought on earlier; Demerit should have played from the start. Smith and McAnuff had excellent games. Bromby and Sadler were ok. Lee a bit dodgy; Shittu great going forward but suspect in defence; Williamson and Eustace not good enough. Although I think the referee's decisions constantly went against us and prevented us from getting a result it has to be admitted - we are not good enough for the Premiership.

Some good points but i think your wrong about johnny Eustace. Most of the passing game originated from him and did you not notice how pumped up he was, pulling all the strings and generally berating anyone who didnt show equal effort. Not being good enough for the Prem is not really the point is it. We need to yo-yo a couple more times, take the money, sort the ground out, then establish.

At the end of the day Aidy Boothroyd provided his own answer recently----IT'S A RESULTS BUSINESS.Just sit down and look at our results since even before Xmas, tells it's own story I'm afraid.
How far dya want to go back? Just the 6 months coz it suits your arguement? Aidy Boothroyd is still in credit and if it is a results only business why were the boys clapped and cheered off the pitch today? Because the real fans recognised the effort put in and the injustice of the result. Unfortunately Cynic, its off to Bedfordshire for you
