Students pushing it to the Peak Students pushing it to the Peak

Words by Hannah McMenaman, Year 12

Blisters and bruises the size of small islands, lines under your eyes that make you resemble a panda, and not forgetting a mini-bus which developed such a strongly foul odour that the teacher wept at the prospect of having to drive it home.

These are just a few of the experiences endured on our Duke of Edinburgh expedition, alongside hilarious memories, a sense of achievement and a genuine appreciation of home comforts...

Rickmansworth School’s latest Silver Duke of Edinburgh Expedition took place in October in the Peak District, where Students in Year 12 hiked for over three days led by Mr Fry and Miss Tarrant. Those involved trekked ten miles each day through a beautiful landscape, with striking features such as caves and waterfalls.

The students worked in groups, locating checkpoints, using compasses and maps to lead them to a different campsite each day. Some who had ‘fast tracked’ into their Silver Duke of Edinburgh, and therefore missed doing their Bronze awards, found that they were unprepared for the harsh, cold nights. Even with three pairs of socks, two pairs of trousers, three tops, a coat and a hat some still felt cold!

Priyanka Gohel, who participated in the expedition, when asked her opinion as to whether she would recommend it, said, “I would definitely recommend it to others as it develops life skills, such as making the best of a situation and learning to cooperate with others under difficult circumstances.

Everyone gained something out of it; bonding throughout the three days and generally had a laugh!” So, if you feel like pushing yourself to your limits, to your very peak, then why not challenge yourself with the Duke of Edinburgh Award?
