Stall's well that ends well

9:21am Thursday 11th October 2001

A rainy Surrey Street Market was brightened up on Monday by the unveiling of commemorative plaques and the announcement of the best stall competition winners.

With their vibrant colours and characteristic charm, the stalls were in contrast to the British weather as Croydon Mayor, Councilor Peter Hopson, unveiled the new street signs at either end of the street, funded by the council's smarter Croydon initiative.

For most stalls it was business as usual, but for stall holders Wayne Smith, Jean Parkhouse and John Powis it was an extra-special day as they were each awarded a Good Stall Award, presented to them in the Town Hall at 7pm.

The trio, who won in the plants and flowers, non-food, and food sections respectively for their impressive customer service and trading standards, were modest about their achievements. Wayne Smith, 44, from Shirley said he was very proud, while Jean Parkhouse, 74, was shocked. She has worked in the market most of her life but only started running her own stall a year ago.

John Powis, 54, who is known for being a dedicated and reliable fruit and veg seller, said: “You have to put a bit back for the customers. I'd have been a bit disappointed if I hadn't won.”

London town crier Peter Moore announced the arrival of the Mayor, who was accompanied by one of the longest holding stall-holders; Rose Lovett.
