Investigations have been launched into fly-tippers committing “environmental crimes” with their littering.

Crime Not To Care – Harrow Council’s campaign to tackle fly-tipping – swept hot spots in Edgware yesterday (Mar 20) to catch out litter offenders.

Cllr Graham Henson joined enforcement officers and street cleaners, finding especially severe fly-tipping spots in areas such as Park Way, Burnt Oak.

Investigations have been triggered after one individual was challenged when waste from their house was dumped just a couple of doors down.

The campaign highlights the issue of rogue traders operating illegally – they are paid to remove waste, only to dump it on our streets and open space.

Cllr Graham Henson, who is a cabinet member for environment, crime and community safety, said: “This is about raising awareness of professional fly-tippers.

“These people are only out for themselves and cause misery to others.

“When getting rid of waste, we all have a legal responsibility to make sure it’s done in the right way – give it to some cash-in-hand cowboy dumper and you’re committing a crime.

“If we find your waste fly-tipped, we’ll be paying you a visit.

“Even if you didn’t dump it, you’re still responsible – it could lead to a fine or a prosecution, so please make sure you always use a registered waste carrier.”

In Harrow there are more than a thousand reports of fly-tips each month, usually appearing as bags full of domestic waste.

Fridges, washing machines, beds and mattresses are also seen regularly, with taxpayers’ money used to foot the bill to clear up.
