A new assistant commissioner has been appointed to the Metropolitan Police.

Commissioner Cressida Dick has promoted Helen Ball to assistant commissioner, with part of her duties to lead the Met's professionalism portfolio.

AC Ball will also manage police training, the inquiry and review support group and the specialist crime review group.

Commissioner Dick said: "Helen has enormous experience of working not just in this organisation, but across policing.

"Her input and expertise will be invaluable as we seek to transform and provide the best possible service to London, and strive to ensure that our officers and staff are as well led and supported as possible."

AC Ball joined the Met in 1987 but left in 2010 to join Thames Valley Police as assistant chief constable.

She then rejoined the Met in 2013 to work in counter terrorism policing before working as strategic leadership advisor at the College of Policing.

AC Ball's start date will be confirmed in due course.
