A new club has been launched for people with dementia thanks to a joint venture by groups trying to solve issues facing their community.
The new project set up between the Rotary Club of Northwick Park, the Rotary Club of Edgware & Stanmore and Dementia Club UK, went live on July 18 in a hall next to John Keble Church, in Edgware.
The Mayor of Harrow, councillor Kareema Marikar, officiated the opening by cutting a celebratory cake provided by Rotarian Sasha.
The club will meet in Baden Powell Hall on the third Wednesday of each month at 2.30pm with sessions ending around 4.30pm. The monthly gathering is open to sufferers and carers alike.
Founder and trustee of Dementia Club UK, Lisa Rutter, saw that all went to plan, and guests enjoyed a short talk about Dementia Club UK, a quiz on herbs and spices, a 20-minute exercise session, advice on email scams and a sing-a-long to finish.
President Mike of the Rotary Club of Northwick Park thanked the mayor for her duty to Harrow.
Former Conservative member, Eric Silver, said: “With dementia becoming more prevalent in Harrow and Brent we welcome the joint initiative in starting a dementia club, to give respite to carers and their loved ones for a few hours each month.
“We hope in time to increase sessions to fortnightly and eventually weekly.”
