A lettings agent in Watford has just reported an “exceptional” level of new lets for September this year. Claytons, based in Garston, reports a 20 per cent increase on rentals for the same period last year and also on its August 2009 statistics.

David Clayton, managing director, says: “We have seen an exceptional level of demand in Watford during the past couple of months and are extremely proud of our staff not only for coping with the demand but maintaining our high levels of customer service, which we pride ourselves on.”

He adds that the success could also be put down to the firm’s approach to adapting to current market forces. He says: “We always advise our landlords honestly and accurately on precise market conditions to ensure that they let their property as quickly as possible at the best rent.”

A survey last month from ARLA (The Association of Residential Letting Agents) says young people in the UK are now twice as likely to rent long-term compared to the previous generation.

David comments: “We are now seeing a generation who want to be upwardly mobile and free from ties. Attitudes towards renting have changed in the UK and perhaps we are becoming more like our fellow Europeans, who tend to rent rather than buy.”
