The Organisation
The History of the YMCA

YMCA Watford is part of a global movement that started in London back in 1844. Sir George Williams wanted to create a solid environment for working class young men to occupy themselves positively and improve their lowly prospects.

There are now more than 14,000 YMCAs across the world, with 130 in the UK and although there is now a much broader scope of work, many of the same principles survive; helping people belong, contribute and thrive in their communities, by supporting their growth in body, mind and spirit. These key points form the basis for the three sides of the YMCA triangle logo.

The YMCA’s uniqueness/distinctiveness is the commitment and loyalty that it has for young people including, through young people’s families and their communities. It is an inclusive Christian approach that recognises and welcomes people of all faith and none.

Each YMCA is governed locally, with its own executive staff and Trustees, but draws strength from other YMCAs around it, as well as from the national body, YMCA England, who are becoming both increasingly committed and effective at supporting and enhancing the work that takes place locally, whilst helping us to achieve a national voice. YMCA Watford is among the larger YMCAs and is beginning to grow into its role as a relevant contributor to the national YMCA movement.

Vision for the YMCA Movement in England
“The YMCA’s vision is of an inclusive Christian Movement, transforming communities so that all young people truly, contribute and thrive”

YMCA Watford

While YMCAs have many and varied activities, there is a tendency towards work with young people and those under thirty. Whilst YMCA Watford has only recently sought to increase this area of its work, we hold a broad portfolio of community work that leaves us well-placed to offer our users a tailored experience at one of our other community sites, which can even result in a job with us!

We run activities that cater for all ages, working with all faiths and none. These start at our Nursery and Children’s Centres, giving children and families support towards the best possible start in life. Our Youth Development operates projects across the county, working with some of the toughest to reach young people, as well running open youth clubs. Our Community Centre in Watford offers a hub for positive community interaction and has exciting potential for future development, whilst our 250-bed hostel supports homeless individuals over two years to move on into safe accommodation and a stable lifestyle. We also run three Health and Fitness Clubs that have brought affordable fitness to the area. Part of our plan for the coming period is to create projects that integrate these different elements of the charity, maximising YMCA Watford’s positive impact on those who need it most.
